Alley Cat Allies is seeking justice for Igor, an 8-month-old kitten who was found immobile and distressed in a pool of bleach allegedly poured by Ohio resident Alonzo Kyles for the purpose of driving cats away. Though Kyles was originally convicted of felony animal cruelty, the decision was overturned because an appellate court claimed there was no proof the kitten was someone’s “pet.” Cruelty should NEVER be tolerated toward any animal, and the lives of owned cats are not more important than the lives of community cats.
We are asking the Ohio Supreme Court to ensure the law protects both owned and unowned cats and set a precedent that animal cruelty against community cats is the same as animal cruelty against an owned cat. To that end, we filed an Amicus Curiae, or “Friend of the Court,” brief in support of the state in the case State v. Kyles.
As the leader of the global movement to protect cats and kittens, Alley Cat Allies takes a stand in cases like this to set a critical standard to defend cats across the nation. We take cruelty toward cats and all animals extremely seriously, and we advocate for the strictest possible punishment by law against cruelty offenders.
Whether a cat lives indoors with people or outdoors with their feline families, they have inherent value. They are members of the community who deserve to live in peace without being subjected to acts of cruelty.
